![]() But, in that setup, you don't have a wired line anymore, only wireless (unless you put a switch before the Airport Express). ![]() So, you could connect that port to your internet service and put out wireless internet (along with wireless print sharing and iTunes audio streaming) to say, a wireless laptop. With Airport Express, you only have one port. Thus, a wireless laptop and a wired computer can get internet access and be fully networked. Basically, the advantage of the Airport Extreme Base Station is that it has two ports, meaning that you could connect it to your ethernet line (ie dsl or cable modem) connect another computer up to with an ethernet wire, and have wireless at the same time. See the Airport Express thread for the final conclusions. quote:Originally posted by xspartachris:nothing really. Quote:Originally posted by Chuckstar:I'm confused as to the distinction between the LAN/WAN port on the Airport Extreme and the LAN port on the Airport Express. So, the Airport Express can only go wired->wireless or wireless->wired, while the regular Airport Base Station can go wired -> wired + wireless or wireless -> (x2)wired. On the other hand, if you already have a wireless network, you could use the port on the Airport Express to connect a wired computer to the wireless network. ![]() which is exactly what I was experiencing.Nothing really. So apparently, the combination of extending the wifi network and using an ethernet cable will create a feedback loop that crashes the network. If you do connect an Ethernet cable to an AirPort that is already set up to Extend a wireless network.that will create a massive feedback loop that will crash the network until you remove the Ethernet connection to the device. If you go back in using AirPort Utility to check the Network Mode setting.you will see that it is really Create a wireless network.Įxtend a wireless network is used only if an AirPort is connecting to another AirPort using wireless.not Ethernet.Įvery one of the Airports on your network must be configured to Create a wireless network. If you are using the setup wizard.the setting will read Extend using Ethernet during the setup. a network already exists?! But, well, there you have it.Īnyway, after discovering this solution via trial and error, I Googled for the difference between these two modes and found this:Ĭreate a wireless network is used only when the Airports have an Ethernet connection. I am extending my wireless network and not creating one. To me, this is completely counter intuitive. In this situation, where you're connecting your Express to your Extreme via ethernet (and not wifi) you actually want to choose Create a wireless network for the Network Mode, and not Extend a wireless network: ![]() I got the pair of used Expresses for $30 total… so why not give this a shot? But up until this point my home wifi network has been rock solid. ![]()
